Explore Tenerife’s Stunning Volcanic Trails on Foot
Tenerife is the highest island in the Canary archipelago and a dream destination for hikers and outdoor lovers. Dominated by El Teide, Spain’s tallest volcano at 3,715 meters above sea level, Tenerife offers some of the most spectacular hiking experiences in Europe. From the volcanic landscapes surrounding El Teide to lush forests and dramatic coastal paths, this island’s natural diversity makes every trail unforgettable.
El Teide itself is a majestic sight, standing 7,500 meters tall when measured from the sea floor—making it the third highest volcano in the world from that perspective. Though dormant since 1798, its powerful presence shapes much of the island’s terrain and hiking routes.
Diverse Trails for Every Hiker
Tenerife’s varied terrain means there’s something for everyone. You can trek through lunar-like volcanic landscapes in Teide National Park, wander in ancient laurel forests, or hike along rugged cliffs with stunning ocean views. About Tenerife
Tenerife is more than just Spain’s highest peak—Mount Teide—rising 3,715 meters above sea level. The island is a paradise for hikers, with an extraordinary variety of landscapes to explore on foot.
The Teide National Park is Tenerife’s iconic natural treasure, but surrounding it lies another gem: the Corona Forestal Nature Reserve. This expansive Canarian pine forest carpets the slopes, ravines, and valleys around the volcano, creating a dramatic contrast of deep greens, volcanic browns, and Atlantic blues.
Tenerife also shelters other natural wonders, like the Anaga Mountains, one of the Canary Islands’ seven Biosphere Reserves. Here, ancient laurel forests—extinct in most parts of the world—thrive in a mystical landscape where nature and rural culture coexist in harmony. In the Teno Rural Park, hikers will discover wild terrain with steep cliffs, deep valleys, and untouched habitats that serve as sanctuaries for rare and endangered species.
From remote farms to dramatic peaks, Tenerife offers diverse hiking experiences in richly preserved nature—perfect for active travelers in search of both adventure and authenticity.
Multi-days trekking
De GR131 Camino Natural Tenerife
On Tenerife, we hike the GR131 from north to south over five days. While we don’t climb Mount Teide itself, we walk alongside it and enjoy spectacular views of the volcano throughout the route. The trail leads us through peaceful pine, eucalyptus, and laurel forests, offering a stunning variety of natural scenery. It’s a beautiful and quiet trek—except near El Parador and El Portillo, you’ll encounter very few other hikers along the way.
The GR131 Tenerife is the first island of the long-distance route.
