About El Hierro
Life on El Hierro is authentic and truly unique. With only around 11,150 inhabitants (2019) spread over 268 km², the island maintains a peaceful, rural lifestyle centered around agriculture, fishing, and traditional crafts. The local community lives in harmony with nature, preserving the island’s rich traditions and culture.
El Hierro has no large industries and runs on approximately 65% green energy, making it one of the most sustainable islands in the Canary Islands. Since 2000, the island has been recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its exceptionally preserved natural environment and cultural heritage.
El Hierro is also famous for its incredible underwater world. Divers can explore more than 25 dive sites with crystal-clear visibility of up to 40 meters, discovering caves, shipwrecks, and lava tunnels beneath the sea.

El Hierro, an island with a true soul! We invite you to experience this unique spirit. As the smallest and westernmost island of the Canaries, El Hierro feels like stepping back 40 years in time. Authentic, peaceful, crime-free, with warm and welcoming people. This island favors small-scale tourism, far from the crowds.
The 2-day GR131 route here demands respect—and we will conquer it! This trail is deeply rooted in local tradition. Every four years, the entire island unites to complete this journey on foot, young and old alike, in a single day. This special event is called “La Bajada.”
The GR131 El Hierro is part of the long distance route.
We will hike this route in 2 days with a small group. In other words, the final part of the GR131, honoring the islanders’ traditions. Includes a guide who knows everything about this journey,
called “El Camino de la Virgen.”

Our unique hiking pin. Each island has its own color. You get this hiking pin when you complete the GR131 Camino Naturales on one of the seven islands. With a group tour you get this at the end of the trip. With an individual trip you take a stamp ticket with you that you have signed off at various locations. With this card you will receive your earned hiking pin. You are eligible for this if the trip is booked with Canary Hiking!
